Surgical AF ablation: Class I (mitral valve) and Class IIa (non-mitral)

LAAE: Class I (AF ablation) &amp; Class IIa (endoscopic/hybrid)

Hybrid AF ablation: Class II

The 2024 European Society of Cardiology Guidelines, developed with EACTS - European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, have been released! Updates include:

Concomitant surgical AF ablation has been upgraded to:
- Class I for patients undergoing mitral valve surgery
- Class IIa for patients undergoing non-mitral valve surgery

LAA Exclusion has been upgraded to:
- Class I for concomitant AF ablation surgeries
- Class IIa for concomitant endoscopic or hybrid AF ablation

Hybrid AF ablation has been upgraded to a class II consideration

Underlying damage that increases the risk of Afib can be found through modifiable factors like hypertension, diabetes and inflammation. Identifying this damage, known as ACM, is crucial for early Afib detection and can also indicate stroke risk even without Afib.

Afib progression can be life threatening – and may not be apparent at first sight.

But it’s possible to recognize it even before experiencing the first episode.

Underlying damage that makes it more likely to develop Afib can be found through modifiable risk factors that are commonly seen in patients being treated for other heart conditions.

Some of the most common are hypertension, diabetes, obesity and inflammation.

Finding the damage, called atrial cardiomyopathy, is important for early detection of Afib – but can also signal the potential of stroke even without Afib.
